How to choose a small PPC agency in the UK
an honest guide.
Boutique agencies win on depth and seniority; they lose on breadth and bus-factor. This guide is honest about both — including where we're the wrong choice.
Why brands go boutique
At a large agency, you're pitched by a director and managed by a graduate. At a good small agency, the people in the sales call run the account. That's the entire trade: senior hands, faster changes, less process — in exchange for narrower scope and a smaller team.
The six questions that separate good boutiques from cheap ones
1. What metric do you manage to?
If the answer is ROAS with no mention of margin, you're hiring a dashboard operator. Ask how they'd handle a high-ROAS campaign on 15% margin stock.
2. Who touches my account weekly — by name?
Boutiques sell seniority. Make them name it.
3. How are you paid?
Percentage-of-spend fees reward your spend going up. Fixed fees don't. Ask, and ask why.
4. Show me a client where you recommended cutting spend.
Every honest agency has these stories. Agencies without them have an incentive problem.
5. What happens to my account if your lead strategist is on holiday?
The bus-factor question. Small agencies should have a real answer, not a reassurance.
6. What won't you do?
Good boutiques have a defined lane and refuse work outside it. "We do everything" from a team of eight is a warning, not a feature.
Independent signals worth checking
- Awards judged on evidence — e.g. the UK and European Search Awards, where entries require client results. (Declared interest: JudeLuxe won Best Small PPC Agency at the European Search Awards 2026.)
- Review platforms with volume — Google reviews, Clutch. Read the 4★ reviews; they're the honest ones.
- Retention numbers — ask directly. Agencies that keep clients past year one are doing something right.
When a boutique is the wrong choice
Multi-market, multi-channel enterprise coordination; heavy creative production needs; or a requirement for 24/7 coverage across regions. Those are network-agency jobs — pay for the breadth.
When we're the wrong choice
We do Google Ads only, for ecommerce, managed to profit. If you need paid social under the same roof, a lead-gen specialist, or an agency for sub-£10k/month spend, we'll tell you in the first call and point you elsewhere. The lane is the product.
